Variables as Expressions

If you use the same expression over and over in your document, you will love this tip! Take a look and if you have any questions on how to implement it, let me know.

Step 1

  • Create a new variable that will represent your expression
  • Open Settings > Document Properties...
  • Navigate to the 'Variables' tab and create a new variable
  • Give the variable a name that represents the expression: “vYoverYSales”

IMPORTANT! Do not start the expression with an '=' sign. If you do, Qlikview will evaluate the expression and then insert the value where you use the variable. You actually want the variable to act as 'text'.

Step 2
  • Create your object
  • Use the new variable as your expression
  • $ sign expansion says, "Give me the text of the variable expression"
  • Qlikview sees the expression you entered into the value of your variable and repaces =$(vYoverYSales) with text
